Continuing Social Emotional Awareness During the Summertime

Social and emotional awareness are important life skills that support all aspects of our children's growth. There are many opportunities to practice these skills and to provide key learning moments. Tapping into social and emotional awareness during the summer months can become instinctive for both you and your child. The key is reminding them to be mindful of these moments as they move through their day.

Below you will see opportunities for your children to practice SEL skills during moments they are already experiencing.

  • When they wake in the morning, being conscious of how they slept and that they are ready for a new day (Awareness)
  • That their body is ready to move on command and respond to their needs, such as hunger (Paying Attention)
  • Including them in the preparation of meals (Self-Management)
  • Assigning chores that are easy to complete and helping them to develop a willingness to do them (Responsibility)
  • Encouraging social interaction with their peers, finding common interests (Relationship)
  • Staying calm during disagreements with other children who may want something different or whose ideas and beliefs may be different (Tolerance)
  • Becoming aware of different occupations and services in the neighborhood (Community)
  • Discovering various interests, people, cultures, and curiosities mindfully (Social Awareness)
  • Treating others the way they want to be treated with fairness (Respect)
  • Mindfully experiencing life and all of its beauty (Gratitude)
  • Being aware of the safety of home and the comfort of being surrounded by their loved ones (Peace)
  • Enjoying this summertime season and the freedom of playing with friends and family (Appreciation)
